New Mexico launches quantum hub to bring together private firms with US national labs

The 35,000-square-foot lab will let Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories work with private firms on quantum systems and commercialization.

  • On Tuesday, New Mexico officials launched The Roadrunner Quantum Lab in Albuquerque, a 35,000-square-foot facility uniting Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs with private quantum computing companies including Diraq, IonQ, and QuEra.
  • Adam Hammer, CEO of Roadrunner Venture Studios, said the project was inspired by Taiwan's 1980s semiconductor zone in Hsinchu County, where government funding enabled firms like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and United Microelectronics Corp to build "elbow to elbow."
  • The Quantum Demonstration Facility will provide independent scientific expertise to help private tenants evaluate quantum systems, with Sandia and Los Alamos contributing decades of research capabilities and cooperative research agreements.
  • "The idea is to help take technology we've done at the labs, and help them commercialize and become successful companies," said Rob Black, New Mexico's secretary of economic development, emphasizing U.S. competitive leadership.
  • The Roadrunner Quantum Lab represents the first concrete step in an effort to direct hundreds of millions of dollars into quantum computing, which could solve problems that would take conventional computers thousands of years.
