Close out the summer with a dazzling show from the Perseid meteor shower!
NASA says the best viewing window is midnight to 4 a.m., when clear skies and a dark location improve chances of seeing colorful meteors.
- The Perseids meteor shower peaks in the predawn hours Thursday morning, offering stargazers the best viewing opportunity between midnight and 5:30 a.m. when the radiant point climbs highest in the sky.
- Every summer, Earth slams into a trail of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, which causes the Perseids. These meteoroids, essentially "space rocks," burn up in the atmosphere at 36 miles per second, producing the shooting lights.
- Stargazers do not need telescopes or binoculars, just about 30 minutes for eyes to adjust to the night sky. Finding a dark location away from city lights and obstructed views significantly improves visibility of the display.
- While the shower peaks overnight on August 12 to 13, it remains active until August 24. Clear skies are forecast for the early morning hours across the UK, according to the Met Office.
- Some viewers might spot meteors after sunset, though the constellation Perseus rises around 11 p.m. and climbs higher by dawn. This annual shower is easy to watch, the American Meteor Society said.
