Upcoming Perseid Meteor Shower Will Be More Visible Thanks to a New Moon

Organizers are offering free and ticketed viewing sessions, with five telescopes at Amiantos Astropark and free stargazing at Troodos Observatory.

  • On Wednesday, August 12, Cyprus clubs will host stargazing events to observe the Perseids Meteor Shower at its peak, with The AstroVerce Astronomy Club Cyprus and The Nightsky Explorers Club offering public viewing at the Amiantos Astropark.
  • Each summer, Earth passes through debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, and this year a new moon provides the darker skies needed for optimal visibility of the phenomenon.
  • At its peak, the shower produces around 125 meteors per hour, as particles hit the atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 miles per second, creating bright streaks of light.
  • Organisers advise visitors to wear warm clothing and avoid flashlights to preserve the darkness needed for observation, while The Troodos Observatory will provide free stargazing from 8pm to midnight.
  • Comet Swift-Tuttle has a 133-year orbit and will not return until 2126, though Royal Museums Greenwich describes this event as "one of the best meteor showers of the year.
