A Chinese Animated Film Mocked as ‘Terrible’ Becomes a Box-Office Hit
The low-budget film drew online attention for its choppy animation after weak early turnout, and fewer than 300 people saw it in its first nine days, Maoyan said.
On Monday, the animated film "Niu Lai" surged to 8.2 million yuan at the box office, with nearly 300,000 admissions, according to Maoyan.
Director Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifan, spent five years creating the film, which initially grossed only 342 yuan on its opening day—a historic box office bomb.
College student Du Mingxi said he recommended the film to friends as a prank, fueling viral trends that viewers describe as "a symbol of the new internet troll culture."
State-Owned outlet Beijing News suggested theaters reject substandard films, while reports indicate Xin has pulled the movie, promising to "continue to strive for improvement in future works."
After the unexpected success, Xin has begun production on a new project titled "Sheep Gao," though some speculate the film was a bid for governmental subsidies.
The low-budget Chinese animated film "Niu Lai" unexpectedly became a viral sensation after viewers widely shared and ridiculed its poor animation quality, grossing over 14.9 million yuan.
