The Typical Gig Worker Is Changing – and Struggling More than Ever to Make Ends Meet
Unions want Telangana rules notified and a minimum fare of ₹50, saying current app-based rates do not ensure fair wages for drivers.
Gig worker unions in Hyderabad have threatened an indefinite strike beginning Saturday, August 8, 2026, protesting current fare structures and demanding improved regulatory oversight of platform-based services.
The coalition, including the Indian National Trade Union Congress Federation, Indian Labour Welfare Federation, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union , demands implementation of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines.
Unions requested a minimum fare of ₹50 and ₹20 per kilometre, while also calling to stop private bikes, cars, and three-wheelers from operating as commercial passenger transport without proper registration.
Labour Department officials confirmed that draft Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Rules are in the final stages, with assent from concerned authorities expected shortly.
TGPWU founder-president Shaik Salauddin called for immediate coordination between the Transport Department and Labour Department, emphasizing the urgency of enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act to address gig worker concerns.
