Ride-Hailing Aggregators Told to Remove Tipping Prompts
MoRTH said tips must be voluntary and shown only after a trip ends, with aggregators passing the full amount to drivers.
- On Wednesday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways directed motor vehicle aggregators to remove pre-trip and mid-trip tipping prompts from their applications with immediate effect, enforcing compliance with the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025.
- Authorities identified aggregators displaying manipulative options such as "Advance Tip" and "Improve your chances of quicker ride confirmation" before ride completion, creating false impressions that tipping would improve driver acceptance or service quality.
- The directive prohibits any tipping mechanism that is "misleading, manipulative, or otherwise in violation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019," ensuring tips remain voluntary and occur only after journey completion.
- "Any interface or functionality inconsistent with the above provisions should be suitably modified without delay," the directive said, requiring aggregators to review digital platforms immediately for full compliance.
- Earlier on Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to make state registration mandatory for app-based ride-hailing service providers such as Ola and Uber, adding new compliance requirements across states.
