Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly set to square off for Florida’s governorship
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds won the Republican nomination for Florida governor while former Rep. David Jolly secured the Democratic nod, setting up a November general election to replace outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Donalds, a 47-year-old House Freedom Caucus member backed by President Donald Trump, emphasizes conservative credentials; Jolly, a former Republican, seeks to build a coalition of Democrats, independents, and disaffected Republicans.
Jolly selected former Congresswoman Gwen Graham as his running mate to bolster his coalition strategy, while Florida has shifted significantly to the right over the past decade, creating a steep challenge for Democrats.
The Cook Political Report rates the race as Solid R, as Donalds has previewed an aggressive general election strategy by labeling Jolly a "vehicle for the Democrats' 'crazy' left wing."
Attempting to end the GOP's 32-year hold on the governor's mansion, Jolly is the second Republican-turned-Democrat to run for governor in two cycles, facing historical headwinds from previous unsuccessful coalition efforts.
