Former Liberal Politician Bruce Baird Dies
Bruce Baird was a long-serving state and federal MP and helped secure the Sydney 2000 Olympics, holding several ministerial portfolios.
Former Liberal politician Bruce Baird, aged 84, has died. A pivotal figure in securing the Sydney Olympic Games, Baird served as Minister for the Olympic Bid between 1990 and 1993.
Baird's political career began in the now-abolished NSW seat of Northcott in 1984, where he served for 11 years before entering federal parliament in 1998. He represented Cook until 2007, retiring before Scott Morrison occupied the seat.
The father of former NSW Premier Mike Baird and journalist Julia Baird, he was a dedicated member of the "Bold & Beautiful" swim squad at Manly and Shelly Beach. Squad organiser Peter Anthony described him as a "great mate."
Liberal MP Matt Cross paid tribute to his long-time mentor, noting they bonded over their shared Christian faith. The NSW Liberal Party honored Baird as a "party stalwart" and deeply respected politician.
Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pescue acknowledged Baird's passing with "great sadness," reflecting his broad community impact. Condolences and prayers have been extended to his family and all who loved the former politician.
