Bust of Robert F. Kennedy stolen from outside RFK Stadium
Events D.C. said the pedestal stayed in storage as police reported no suspects and an unclear removal method.
- A famous bronze bust of RFK has been reported stolen from the RFK Memorial Stadium Grounds. Authorities were notified after discovering the sculpture was missing from its pedestal in a publicly accessible area.
- Created by sculptor Robert Berks in 1969, the bust stood outside the RFK Memorial Stadium for decades. During the recent demolition project, the sculpture remained in a grassy area just outside the site's security fence.
- The theft may have gone unnoticed for two weeks, according to a police report obtained by News4. Authorities believe the sculpture went missing sometime between Sept. 15 and Oct. 1, as first reported by The Washington Post.
- Denise Krepp, who lives nearby, criticized the lack of security, saying the site should have been better protected. They told WTOP the remaining granite pedestal was placed in storage for safekeeping.
- Skip Strobel, who maintained the area as a personal mission honoring RFK, expressed heartbreak at the loss. Cemeteries in Washington have recently faced similar thefts of bronze items sold as scrap for quick cash.
