Trump urges Sen. John Fetterman to switch parties and become a Republican
Trump said John Fetterman would do better as a Republican as Democrats need four seats to retake the Senate majority.
President Donald Trump encouraged Democratic Sen. John Fetterman to switch parties on Saturday, telling reporters at Joint Base Andrews, "Id love to see him as a Republican" after returning from Tennessee.
Fetterman's relationship with Democrats became tenuous after he praised Republican Dave McCormick last month in a convention video, stating "I'm always going to stand with America" while rejecting extremism.
Fetterman previously wrote in The Washington Post he would be a "terrible Republican," while historical precedents include Former Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter abandoning Republicans in 2009 and Jim Jeffords of Vermont leaving the GOP in 2001.
Trump's overtures arrive as Republicans risk their Senate majority in next month's elections, with Democrats needing four seats for a 51-seat majority amid economic fallout from the Iran war.
Such flirtations with the GOP could complicate Fetterman's path to winning the Democratic nomination for another term, as Trump's public overtures might make re-election difficult within his own party.
