BNP Paribas to keep sensitive data off public cloud despite Google deal
The bank will use Google’s Gemini models for internal AI work while keeping highly sensitive customer data and key operations on other systems.
- On Thursday, BNP Paribas announced a five-year partnership with Google Cloud, expanding the bank's access to Gemini Enterprise and AI-optimized infrastructure for advanced AI capabilities.
- BNP Group Chief Information Officer Marc Camus stated the deal does not mark a "wholesale move" to the cloud, as the bank maintains a multi-cloud approach to balance cost, quality, and security requirements.
- While integrating Google technologies, the bank will keep sensitive insurance and medical data on-premise. Camus noted, "The fact that we signed this agreement with Google doesn't mean that we will get rid of our on-premise infrastructure."
- The bank plans to deploy agentic AI for corporate credit memos, sales, and research workflows. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the partnership helps financial institutions "streamline operations, assess risk, and serve their clients."
- BNP Paribas maintains partnerships with French AI company Mistral while integrating Gemini models into its internal generative AI assistant, currently available to more than 65,000 employees.
