B.C. Man Gets 22 Years in Jail for Historical Sex Crimes on Vancouver Island
Police say victims and witnesses helped secure convictions after prosecutors added 12 charges, bringing the total against Shaun Pater to 27.
A Port Alberni man, Shaun Pater, received a 22-year sentence last week after being convicted of multiple sexual offences, including sexual interference against persons under 14 and 16.
When Pater went to court, he initially faced 15 charges, but the BC Prosecution Service later added an additional dozen, bringing the total to 27; Inspector Kim Bruce stated the historical offences spanned several years.
Investigators required "an exceptional degree" of skill to bring the complex case to court, while collaborators Terrance Houbregs and Wayne Moore face charges alongside Pater but await sentencing.
Port Alberni RCMP commended victims and witnesses for their courage, noting their participation in the justice process resulted in convictions that may bring "some measure of closure" to those impacted.
Publication bans prevent the sharing of information that could identify any victims or witnesses involved in the proceedings, ensuring continued legal protections for those directly impacted by Pater's offences.
