Audacity Audio-Editing App No Longer Looks Like It's From the Early 2000s

The update adds a rebuilt Qt interface, new editing tools and redesigned effects while keeping Audacity free and open source, Muse Group said.

  • On Thursday, Muse Group released Audacity 4.0.0, the biggest update to the 26-year-old open-source audio editor in five years. The software features a completely overhauled interface with dark mode for Users.
  • While the update departs from traditional workflows, developers focused on maintaining continuity for veterans. Users can enable the classic look during setup, and projects created in Version 3 open normally in the new Version.
  • Expanded Non-destructive editing allows Clips to overlap, letting Users recover trimmed audio by extending the Clip. New automation features and an envelope tool provide capabilities similar to professional DAWs like Ableton Live or ProTools.
  • Jack Sutton, head of communications for Muse Group, credited Martin Keary, former head of product, for building Audacity 4. The team aims to modernize the software without adding complex MIDI support.
  • Audacity 4.0.0 is available now on GitHub and MuseHub. While structural changes enable building future DAW-like features, the team prioritizes maintaining efficient audio editing for independent creators.
