Huawei launches new foldable smartphone

  • On Monday, Huawei launched its flagship Mate XT2 foldable smartphone featuring the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip and a redesigned folding mechanism to defend its lead in China's premium market against Apple and Xiaomi.
  • Huawei maintains a commanding 68 per cent of China's folding phone market and a 22.6 per cent share of the total smartphone sector, leveraging the LogicFolding architecture and "Tau Scaling Law" principle to enhance performance.
  • Prices for the Mate XT2 start at 19,999 yuan , with the most expensive version reaching 24,999 yuan . Huawei Executive Director Richard Yu told a press conference that "pricing right now is a real challenge, because memory costs have risen sharply."
  • Xiaomi shares sank 3 per cent in afternoon trade following the announcement, while the company prepares to launch a rival folding phone later Monday. Apple is scheduled to unveil its latest iPhone series on Wednesday.
  • Despite US sanctions barring sales, Huawei remains the only major brand selling a so-called tri-fold phone. South Korea's Samsung Electronics previously launched a tri-fold device but discontinued sales after three months, leaving Huawei with a unique market position.
