Three Arrested After Missing Cat’s Severed Tail Found in Owners’ Mailbox

Police say three suspects remain in custody after a cat’s severed tail was posted through a letterbox and the animal’s body was later found nearby.

  • Three suspects were arrested in Hull following the death of Max, an eight-year-old cat whose severed tail was discovered in his owners' mailbox on September 18 in Appleton Road.
  • Max vanished from his home on September 14, and five days later, owner Lisa discovered his distinctive white-tipped tail inside their mailbox. A dog walker found the cat's body in nearby woods six days after that discovery.
  • Authorities arrested a 37-year-old woman and two men, aged 47 and 75, on suspicion of malicious communications and failing to prevent animal suffering. The 47-year-old and 75-year-old faced additional charges of assault, criminal damage, witness intimidation, and harassment.
  • Inspector Lucy Kevan of Humberside Police said, "I understand a report of this nature causes concern among the community," while reassuring the public the incident is believed to be isolated. Max's tail was sent to Liverpool for forensic examination.
  • Nine years into their relationship, owners Louise and Lisa canceled their planned wedding, stating they could no longer bear the thought of celebrating. The couple held a candlelit memorial for Max outside their apartment beside his favorite tree.
