UCP, NDP Both Find Opposition to Data Centres at Town Halls
Residents challenged Alberta’s plan for Meta’s $13 billion AI data centre, citing water, power and transparency concerns as the minister defended 300 jobs.
On Thursday, Technology Minister Nate Glubish faced intense heckling and profanity from residents at a Redwater town hall regarding Meta's proposed $13-billion AI data centre project in Sturgeon County.
Meta's planned $13-billion AI project, supported by a $4.6-billion natural gas-fired power plant, triggered widespread opposition over residents' concerns about safeguards and trust in government regulations.
Wednesday's meeting in Lacombe saw similar backlash, while the NDP held a separate virtual town hall earlier this month that was also dominated by public opposition to data centre development.
Glubish defended the project, citing 300 potential jobs and over 30 years of zoning approval, yet faced continued boos and crowd interjections throughout the evening.
Premier Danielle Smith is scheduled to join Glubish for a virtual town hall on August 27, as the UCP government continues its engagement efforts amid persistent public skepticism.
