Alberta Driver Caught Going 142 Km/h in a 70 Zone on Northern B.C. Highway
The driver faces a $483 ticket, towing and storage fees, and at least three years of high-risk insurance premiums, police said.
- On Aug. 13, Highway Patrol stopped a 21-year-old driver from Athabasca in a Chevrolet Trax near Taylor after clocking the vehicle at 142 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. Police impounded the vehicle for seven days.
- Police issued the driver a $483 ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for excessive speed over 60 km/h. She is also responsible for all towing and storage costs during the impound period.
- Combined with the ticket, the driver faces at least three years of high-risk insurance premiums. Total financial impact from the speeding infraction will exceed more than $2,000.
- Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with Highway Patrol stated that whether a driver is a visitor or local, they must obey speed limits. He warned excessive speeders can be caught anywhere, including rural Highway locations.
- Some people mistakenly believe Police do not patrol rural areas, an assumption that can prove expensive. Highway Patrol maintains enforcement across the province, as this incident demonstrates.
