Alabama launches statewide emergency notification system for disasters
The system will send faster warnings through phones, television and radio, giving residents more time to prepare for floods and other disasters, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Governor Kay Ivey announced the activation of a $1.2 million statewide emergency notification system designed to provide Alabamians with faster alerts about floods and other disasters.
- The deadly July 2025 Texas flooding that killed 27 people, including 25 children at Camp Mystic and eight-year-old Sarah Marsh of Homewood, prompted Ivey to prioritize emergency preparedness systems.
- Residents can register through the Alabama Emergency Management Agency website or by texting ALalert to 77295, receiving alerts via cellphones, landlines, and local television and radio stations.
- The system's activation comes ahead of National Preparedness Month in September, strengthening Alabama's capacity to respond to severe weather and emergencies that develop with little warning.
- Earlier this year, Ivey signed the Sarah Marsh Heaven's 27 Camp Safety Act into law, establishing additional emergency preparedness requirements for summer camps across the state.
