Air Canada targets global growth with new routes, while U.S. travel demand still sags
The airline says the expansion will make it the second-largest North American carrier by overseas destinations served.
- On Thursday, Air Canada announced a new direct route between Shannon Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport, operating three times weekly from June 10, 2027, to October 2, 2027.
- Shannon Airport has been steadily growing post-pandemic, currently operating 40 routes—the highest number in 17 years—with this service following years of aviation development team groundwork.
- The route will be served by an Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle aircraft with a maximum capacity of 244 passengers, featuring economy and business classes with lie-flat seats.
- Ray O'Driscoll, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, said the airline's choice "sends a powerful signal about the strength of the West of Ireland market and its international potential."
- Air Canada is also launching new services to Oslo and Nice next summer while preparing to receive its first Toronto-based Boeing 787-10 aircraft later this year.
