Aiden McCown throws for 3 TDs and Lamar defeats Abilene Christian 21-14 in opener
Aiden McCown completed 17 of 32 passes for 183 yards as Lamar held off a late Abilene Christian rally.
On Saturday, Lamar defeated Abilene Christian 21-14 in the season opener, with quarterback Aiden McCown throwing three touchdown passes to lead the Cardinals.
McCown ignited the offense early, hitting Davin Driskill for a 5-yard score to establish a 7-0 lead, then connecting with Blake Thomas for a 33-yard touchdown to build a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Wildcats reserve quarterback John David Black replaced starter Tucker Parks in the second quarter after Parks was intercepted on back-to-back possessions, completing 15 of 25 passes for 142 yards with two touchdowns.
Black threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Cristian Driver, pulling Abilene Christian within 21-14 with 3:12 remaining, but the comeback attempt ultimately fell short on the final drive.
The game served as a rematch of last year's first-round FCS playoff matchup, which Abilene Christian won 38-20. Next week, the Wildcats travel to Texas Tech while Lamar visits Louisiana-Lafayette.
