Scientists have used artificial intelligence to record the explosion of a massive star as it attempted to devour a nearby black hole, and believe they have discovered a previously unseen type of supernova that could help them understand explosions.

Astronomers have observed for the first time the destruction of a star that chose the wrong partner – a fatal interaction with a black hole that triggered a spectacular and stunning new type of supernova explosion.
