A cosmic breadcrumb trail leads astronomers to a discovery in another galaxy
The faint star ribbon lets astronomers estimate the galaxy’s mass and dark matter using Hubble archival data, the team said.
- On Wednesday, astronomers published a study in Nature detailing the first detection of a globular cluster stellar stream outside the Milky Way, located in the ultra-diffuse galaxy UGC 9050-Dw1.
- Archival Hubble Space Telescope data revealed the faint arc of stars roughly 115 million light-years from Earth, a dense ball being slowly pulled apart by its host galaxy's gravity.
- Co-Lead author Julie Kiel Holm of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen noted that about 80% to 85% of the universe is dark matter. Modeling the stream allowed the team to map the galaxy's gravitational field.
- Sarah Pearson, an associate professor at DTU Space, the National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark, stated these ultra-diffuse galaxies provide a 'great combination' of faint background and tidal fields necessary to isolate streams.
- Tjitske Starkenburg, a co-author at Northwestern University, said NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launching later this month, will have a field of view 'like 100 Hubbles in one image,' enabling future dark matter mapping.
