A construction crew was demolishing a house – and uncovered a $10 million gold hoard

Construction workers in Belgium discovered a massive hoard of gold bars and coins hidden within a cellar wall during renovation work, with the cache estimated at $10.5 million USD.
Once a brewer's home around the turn of the 20th century, the structure now houses social welfare organization CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, though building records offer no clues about why the gold was hidden there.
"We stumbled across it while carrying out groundwork to lay a pipe for the sewerage system," worker Kobe told VRT. The team recovered over 40 gold bars and 4,000 gold coins now secured in a high-security government vault.
Police are guarding the fenced-off construction site following unauthorized break-in attempts, while the prosecutor launched an investigation to determine if criminal activity was involved in the hoard's concealment.
Belgian law grants rightful owners five years to claim the hoard if no criminal activity is proven; if unclaimed, CAW Oost-Vlaanderen and the construction crew could split the fortune after 1,823 days of waiting.
