Indonesia's Anak Krakatau eruption halts flights, schools, fishing

- On Sunday, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted early morning, forcing Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to suspend all flight operations from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. due to volcanic ash drifting across western Indonesia.
- Indonesia's Geological Agency reported the volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra showed activity signs since Friday before the 30-second eruption at 3:53 a.m. Sunday.
- Two ash clouds identified by the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre reached altitudes of 20,000 and 50,000 feet, drifting northeast and westward across Jakarta, Banten, West Java, and surrounding waters.
- The temporary closure affected 209 flight movements and about 22,800 passengers, with domestic routes to Makassar, Bali, and Surabaya canceled or diverted, plus international disruptions to Singapore and other hubs.
- Known as the "child of Kratakau," the volcano caused a devastating 2018 tsunami that killed at least 430 people; authorities now warn visitors to maintain at least 3 kilometers distance from the crater.
