Lab tests confirm positive hantavirus case in B.C. cruise ship passenger

Federal officials confirmed Canada’s first case of hantavirus linked to the outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship on Sunday. After one of the four passengers from the ship quarantining in B.C. developed symptoms on Thursday, and received a “presumptive positive” test on Friday, samples were sent to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg to confirm the results. The Public Health Agency of Canada says the sample came back positive for the Andes strain. The individual’s travel partner was also tested and is confirmed negative.

Another man has died while waiting for care at hospital: Alberta Medical Association

The Alberta Medical Association says another patient has died while waiting for care at a hospital, as the province’s health agency investigates the case. AMA President Dr. Brian Wirzba says the man arrived at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital on May 8 and died several hours later. “He received some initial therapy in the emergency room but because there were no stretcher spaces inside the emergency department, he was left in waiting room,” Wirzba said in a Saturday phone interview.
