New Initiative to Support Immigrants, Refugees in King County
The public-private partnership will match county money with foundation support and fund basic needs, rapid response training and mental health programs through 2027.
- On Tuesday, Aug. 18, King County Executive Girmay Zahilay announced the South King County Immigrant and Refugee Futures Fund , a $900,000 public-private partnership supporting immigrant and refugee communities.
- This initiative builds upon Zahilay's February 'Protecting Immigrant and Refugee Communities Executive Order,' which distributed $2 million in emergency funds to organizations supporting residents impacted by federal immigration enforcement.
- Communities of Opportunity and the Community Well-Being Initiative lead this partnership, working alongside the Renton Regional Community Foundation and the Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation to implement long-term community support.
- Resources will support "funding basic needs, rapid response training for families," according to the press release, alongside safety education and mental health programs focused on community healing.
- The RRCF will match at least $250,000 of King County's contribution, with the initiative running through 2027 while inviting additional philanthropic organizations to join the effort.
