Young Quebec sailor, 17, aims to challenge gender stereotypes in sailing
Jasmine Pernot will be one of only three women skippers as competitors spend more than 24 hours at sea in the 400-nautical-mile race.
- On August 6, 17-year-old Skipper Jasmine Pernot will lead a seven-person crew in the inaugural St-Laurent 400, a 400-nautical-mile offshore race beginning in Tadoussac and finishing in the Magdalen Islands.
- Pernot discovered sailing through the Femina Jeunesse program, which offers free training to teenage girls, and credits mentor Daniel Bérubé with transforming her ambitious idea into reality.
- Racing for more than 24 consecutive hours straight, the team will challenge sailing stereotypes. "I want to show that we're all capable," Pernot said, noting she is one of only three women skippers in the event.
- Bérubé will serve as the only man aboard the all-female crew. While this marks her first time as skipper in a race of this scale, Pernot has already sailed extensively, including in the Caribbean.
- Following the race, Pernot will begin marine transportation studies this fall at the Institut maritime du Québec in Rimouski. Her next goal is the Caribbean 600, a 600-nautical-mile offshore race circling 11 Caribbean islands.
