Portuguese prosecutors have charged a 23-year-old local man with attempted espionage for Russia and the theft of computer equipment owned by NATO soldiers.
A 23-year-old man has been charged with attempted espionage for trying to sell stolen information from NATO military computer equipment to the Russian embassy in Lisbon, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) said today. In Lisbon, in a hotel where NATO military hosts were hosted, the young man "appropriated from a computer and an iPad" belonging to NATO and Swedish Navy. He will then have gone to Russia's embassy to try to sell them.
The case goes back to 2025, having coincided with the Initial Planning Conference at the School of the Naval Base of Alfeite, in Almada. The youth is in pretrial detention.
In addition to the suspicions of spying, the process includes a wide range of other crimes, such as qualified thefts, crime of false statements, pornography of minors, two conduct crimes without paper and 11 crimes of calunious complaints.
