Young Okanagan athlete gains attention from Canadian Olympic Committee
The 15-year-old soccer and volleyball player was one of more than 3,000 athletes in local qualifiers and will join 100 finalists in Toronto.
- Lake Country teen Jordynn Burford was recently named a finalist in the RBC Training Ground, the Canadian Olympic Committee's official talent search. The 15-year-old was selected from more than 3,000 athletes who participated in local qualifiers this year.
- Events tested core speed, strength, power, and endurance across the country to identify top talent. The committee now advances the top 100 athletes to the national final, where they will compete for spots in the national development program.
- Burford, a soccer and volleyball player from George Elliott Secondary, drew attention for skeleton potential. Joe Cecchini, Olympic high performance director and national head coach for skeleton, said, "We believe Jordynn has the potential to progress."
- Two more Kelowna athletes, Kaylie Lofstrom and Avlyn Smirl , also earned spots as finalists. Both caught the committee's attention and will join Burford competing for the national development program.
- The top 100 finalists will gather in Toronto on Saturday, Oct. 3, for the national final. Thirty-five athletes will be selected for funding to support coaching, equipment, and travel within the national development program.
