Father of USS Lincoln Sailor Detained by ICE Agents
The sailor said he learned of the detention while deployed for more than nine months aboard the carrier and is seeking his father’s release.
- On Saturday, Luis Manuel Aviles Roa was detained by ICE in Key West, Florida, while his son, Joshua Aviles, a sailor deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, learned of the arrest while at sea nine months into his deployment.
- Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan national, has lived in the United States for about 19 years and holds a work permit while awaiting a decision on his pending green-card application.
- Joshua Aviles, deployed for more than nine months, wrote on Facebook he is fighting "two battles"—against Iran and immigration enforcement—describing the detention as heartbreaking.
- The Homeland Security Department confirmed the arrest, stating Aviles Roa "entered the country illegally on an unknown date and location." This case is among more than 50 military family members detained since January 2025.
- Danitza Garcia James, CEO of Repatriate Our Patriots, said the case forces service members to manage military duties while handling family crises, as the USS Abraham Lincoln and its roughly 5,000 crew members head home.
