Police watchdog probing death of man in custody
STANDISH, WIGAN, GREATER MANCHESTER, AUG 4 – The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating after Ellis Rocks was found unresponsive in custody and later died, with paramedics called when he suffered cardiac arrest, officials said.
- On Thursday 31 July, 26-year-old Ellis Rocks was detained at the Britannia Hotel in Standish, Wigan, and an ambulance was called at 2.30am on Friday after he was found unresponsive; he died in hospital at 7.20am on Sunday.
- GMP officers responded to a drug dealing call, arrested Ellis Rocks, and searched him before transfer to custody.
- Paramedics were called at approximately 2.30am on Friday, transported him to hospital, and he suffered a cardiac arrest en route, with CPR commenced.
- Following a mandatory referral from GMP, the IOPC deployed investigators early Friday and declared an investigation at 10.18am on Sunday.
- Incidents where someone dies following police contact are rare but deeply impactful, and the mother of Ellis Rocks vowed she 'will fight for justice until the day she dies'.
