Young Girl Chased in West Kelowna by Someone in a Dr. Seuss Costume
Police say the costume is not a crime, but following a young person could amount to criminal harassment and assault charges.
- West Kelowna RCMP is investigating a report of a teenage girl chased by someone wearing a Cat in the Hat costume while walking in the community on Aug. 24; she returned home safely.
- Investigators are seeking doorbell, security, and dash camera footage from the 2000-block of Shamrock Drive around 9 p.m. on Aug. 24, following a similar report in Fort St. James.
- While wearing a costume is not a crime, Cpl. Devon Gerrits of the RCMP warned that following someone in a way that causes fear may constitute criminal harassment or assault.
- Gerrits warned that pranks causing fear carry serious consequences. Police have released a grainy photograph of the suspect and urge anyone with information to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
- Parents and youth are reminded to move toward a populated location if they feel followed, then contact a trusted adult and call 911 if they believe they are in immediate danger.
