‘You can’t park there’: Hot air balloon unexpectedly touches down in an Oklahoma neighborhood
Pilot Darrell Duer Jr. said calm winds forced the balloon down as six passengers rode aboard and no one was hurt.
On Saturday, a hot air balloon unexpectedly landed in the middle of a street in an Edmond, Oklahoma, neighborhood with six people aboard. Edmond Police Department officials reported no injuries from the landing.
Pilot Darrell Duer Jr. said high-pressure ridges can cause winds to drop below two miles an hour, forcing emergency landings in neighborhoods. Duer was circling a block radius before touchdown.
Edmond, located around 14 miles outside of Oklahoma City, is where the balloon touched down. The six passengers had booked the flight simply to enjoy the experience, with no special occasion or festival planned.
Edmond Police Department officers responded to the scene after the balloon touched down. Officials said the roadway in the neighborhood was reopened after crews cleared the area.
Such unexpected landings have occurred previously in the area, which officials called an 'unusual landing' that served as a 'surprising wake-up call' for the metro neighborhood. The incident underscores how weather conditions can force emergency procedures.
