Yellowpoint Lodge: from dream to family legacy

The family-run resort survived a 1985 fire and now passes to the next generation with 70 acres under conservation protection, officials said.

  • Grandchildren of founder Gerry Hill are assuming leadership roles at Yellowpoint Lodge, ensuring the family-run resort remains a nature-focused retreat after nearly nine decades of operation.
  • Gerry purchased the 90-acre waterfront property in 1929 and constructed the original lodge in 1939. His son, Richard Hill, later maintained the site after acquiring the property from his father.
  • After the original 12,000-square-foot structure burned down on October 4, 1985, community members helped rebuild the resort. The new facility expanded to 15,000 square feet with assistance from locals and Friends of Yellowpoint Society.
  • To preserve the land, Richard placed a covenant on 70 acres of the property. The agreement is held jointly by the Nanaimo Area Land Trust and The Land Conservancy in Victoria.
  • Richard and his wife, Sandy Hill, now plan to gradually transition management to their children. This generational shift aims to continue the family's legacy of hosting guests while maintaining the property's deep connection to the community.
