Yasin Malik willing to face death penalty in Sarla Bhat case, announces divorce from Mushaal

- On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik told an Additional Sessions Court in Srinagar he will not contest the 1990 murder trial of nurse Sarla Bhat, stating "I will no longer contest the trial and the death penalty may be considered for me."
- The State Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet on June 29 naming Malik as an accused in Bhat's 1990 death. Malik calls the allegations a "subsequent invention," arguing he was critically injured during a BSF raid at Narwara and remained in a coma.
- In the same 25-page affidavit, Malik announced he is divorcing his wife, Mushaal Hussein Mullick, citing his prolonged incarceration and inability to communicate with his family over the past eight years without phone or video access.
- Describing his submission as a "final statement of conscience," Malik stated "I bear no hatred towards any individual. I do not seek revenge against anyone." He maintains he was falsely implicated due to political circumstances.
- The court set the next hearing for September 19. Malik has been held in Tihar Jail since 2019, where he is serving a life sentence for a separate terror-funding conviction from more than four years ago.
