Yahoo Scout Is an AI ‘Answer Engine’ that Wants to Challenge Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode
Scout uses Anthropic Claude to combine web and Yahoo data into verifiable answers with interactive media and integrates AI features across Yahoo’s product portfolio.
- On Tuesday Yahoo debuted Scout in beta on scout.yahoo.com and inside the Yahoo Search app on iOS and Android in the U.S., powered by Anthropic's Claude.
- To power richer answers, Yahoo built Scout to synthesize web and proprietary data, embedding it across Mail, News, Finance, Sports and Shopping to add summaries and stock analysis.
- Scout's interface foregrounds links and source clicking, including inline citations with up to nine sources, interactive media, and structured lists and tables for easy verification.
- Yahoo is pitching Scout as its return to the search conversation, with CEO Jim Lanzone saying it could replace traditional Yahoo Search while monetizing through affiliate links and testing ads on a small percentage of queries against Google and Perplexity.
- Yahoo plans to add personalization and new vertical features over time, aiming to keep the open web visible and support publishers by joining Microsoft's Publisher Content Marketplace pilot while leveraging data from 250 million monthly users, 500 million profiles, and 18 trillion annual signals.
