Xi Resets Ties with Modi on First Visit to India in 7 Years
The leaders agreed to rebuild business and transport links and seek a boundary settlement as bilateral trade hit $155.6 billion in 2025, Chinese customs data showed.
On Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in New Delhi during the BRICS Summit, marking Xi's first visit to India in seven years.
Ties between the neighbors had soured following a 2020 Himalayan border skirmish that killed 20 Indian soldiers and Chinese troops. Recent momentum, including restored direct flights and border negotiation progress, prompted this diplomatic reset.
Bilateral trade reached a record $155.6 billion in 2025, though India's imports from China hit about $132 billion, leaving New Delhi with a trade deficit exceeding $100 billion.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that "peace and tranquility in the border areas remains an essential basis" for development. The Ministry of External Affairs cited commitment to a "fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question."
Challenges persist as both nations maintain substantial military deployments in the Himalayas while businesses report visa delays. Beijing continues outreach to India's neighbors Pakistan and Bangladesh, creating additional friction points.
