Chinese Generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli were dismissed from their positions in the Central Military Commission (CMC), Reuters reported. Zhang held the position of vice president of CMC and was considered second in command after Chinese President Xi Jinping and his closest military ally, writes The Moscow Times.
China has removed two of its generals from the top of the military. In January, a major investigation was opened into Zhang Youxia, who was China's highest-ranking military officer after Leader Xi Jinping, and Liu Zhenli, head of the Joint Staff Department. This means that the military commission, once a seven-member body, now has only two active members.
The successive downfalls of high-ranking military officials, including Zhang Youxia, have created instability in the military's leadership. Experts point out that the absence of influential figures in the military means Xi Jinping currently has "power but cannot move the military." There are also concerns about "soft resistance" within the military.
Two deputy heads of the Central Military Council, which is headed by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, have been fired over alleged corruption charges.
