Latest Xbox Layoffs Hit Id Software as Doom: The Dark Ages' DLC Launches, Around Half of the Staff Potentially Cut
Xbox is cutting 3,200 jobs by the end of fiscal 2027 as id Software and other Bethesda studios face major layoffs.
- Xbox is pursuing a 'course correction' resulting in significant layoffs at Software, the legendary Doom maker facing cuts as part of the most significant restructuring in Xbox's history.
- Ex-Bethesda Game Studios lead Jeff Gardiner reported roughly 95 layoffs at the studio, while Apogee and 3D Realms founder Scott Miller added the cuts included "most coders."
- Colin Geller, principal concept artist at the studio for over 12 years, was laid off after working on every new Doom project since 2016. "One of the truly special things about the studio was the sheer amount of skill amongst the team," Geller said.
- These cuts threaten the future of id Tech, regularly called the best FPS game engine in the industry, even as Xbox prioritizes the Doom and Quake franchises as core to its strategy.
- Elsewhere, ZeniMax Online's The Elder Scrolls Online team faces similar uncertainty despite avoiding closure, while Xbox plans 3,200 job cuts by financial year 2027 as studios like Compulsion Games and Undead Labs go independent.
