Xbox Game Pass Subscribers Are Losing a Big Perk This November
Microsoft says only 4% of Game Pass subscribers will hit the new caps, and extra cloud playtime will be sold through the Xbox Store.
Starting in November, Microsoft will impose monthly time limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass subscribers, capping usage at 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential tiers.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma attributed the adjustment to rising cloud infrastructure costs, aiming to balance service reliability with growing demand as the company pursues a business-model reset.
Microsoft claims the change affects 4% of subscribers; simultaneously, non-subscribers can purchase additional playtime hours through the Xbox Store starting in November.
Early community feedback has been critical of the shift from previous unlimited access, with comparisons drawn to NVIDIA's GeForce Now service, which already caps usage at 100 hours monthly.
The policy reflects Microsoft's broader strategy to link revenue with consumption, mirroring usage-based billing already implemented for AI tools like GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
