Xbox Cloud Gaming Is Getting Monthly Time Limits, and You'll Be Able to Pay for More
Microsoft will let players buy extra cloud time, and says the change affects 4% of Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
On Thursday, Microsoft announced it will impose monthly cloud gaming time limits for Xbox Game Pass subscribers starting in November, ending years of unlimited access.
Rising costs for hardware components like RAM and storage have skyrocketed this year, driving Microsoft to cite the growing expense of providing cloud gaming as usage increases.
Monthly caps include 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, 10 hours for Premium members, and 5 hours for Essential subscribers at $9.99 monthly.
Microsoft estimates the caps will affect 4% of subscribers; those users may purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store, an option also opening to non-subscribers in November.
Under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the change reflects a broader push toward usage-based billing across Microsoft's divisions, following July layoffs and a strategy to manage costs.
