WRU Issues Guidance for Heat and Dry Pitches Following Heatwave
The club is using alternative sessions and flexible plans as little rainfall and high temperatures leave grass recovery severely restricted.
The RFU has permitted clubs to postpone opening-day fixtures scheduled for September 12 in the Regional and Counties Leagues due to extended dry weather leaving many pitches unsafe for play.
Almost three-quarters of England is currently classified as being in drought, with the South East among the hardest-hit areas; prolonged dry weather has left grass pitches extremely hard and dry.
Community Rugby Director Geraint John said the WRU has issued similar warnings, advising clubs to reduce full-contact sessions and assess training surfaces carefully. He stated: "Taking sensible precautions, including staying hydrated, seeking shade and taking breaks from direct sunlight, can help everyone remain safe."
Worthing Raiders are adapting by modifying training intensity and locations to protect both player welfare and facilities. Chair Tim Mackew said: "These are unusual conditions and they require us to think differently."
This is the fourth time in five seasons that drought has disrupted the sport, with pitches potentially determined unfit for the opening weekend of the Regional and Counties Leagues season.
