Writers Guild calls on NY attorney general to investigate Colbert cancellation, Trump ‘bribe’

- In a call reported by The Hill, the Writers Guild of America urged New York Attorney General Letitia James to investigate CBS' cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, amid allegations of attempted bribery related to a $28 billion merger, the report stated.
- On July 2nd, Paramount Global agreed to pay $16 million to settle President Donald Trump’s lawsuit, and on July 15, Colbert called it a `big fat bribe` for merger approval.
- The Late Show lost $40 million annually in 2024–2025, revealing declining revenue and noting 3.61 million viewers, a 16% increase from last year.
- Meanwhile, Letitia James has yet to comment on whether she will pursue the probe, while Trump celebrated on Truth Social with `I absolutely love that Colbert got fired.`
- Looking to the future, CBS confirmed earlier this week that it will end the Late Show in May 2026, as Paramount seeks FCC approval for its $28 billion merger with Skydance.
