Joxe Azurmendi passed away yesterday, Tuesday, in Donostia, at the age of 84. Philosopher, high-ranking thinker and intellectual, poet, essayist, professor emeritus of the University of the Basque Country, honorary Basque scholar and, above all, a Basque and Basque-loving person, Azurmendi has left a material legacy of 40 books and more than 500 articles in Basque society. Joxe Azurmendi (Zegama, 1941-2025) was a writer, philosopher and essayist. He made a great contribution to literature and thought, not only as an intellectual, but also as a lifelong activist in the Basque language and cultural movements. Among other things, he was one of the founders of the Summer Basque University, and was an active member of the Jakin group for many years.
Organized by the University of the Basque Country and Jakin, Joxe Azurmendi. The Basque Waterfall of Thought conference was held on December 11, 12 and 13, 2019, at the San Telmo Museum in Donostia, and was attended by around 50 speakers.
