McDonald’s Tests Archy, Its AI Drive-Thru Voice

The system will learn menu items and accents over coming weeks, and customers can ask for a person during the trial, McDonald’s says.

  • McDonald's is testing an AI-powered drive-thru system at its Schofields restaurant in western Sydney, marking an Australian-first trial of the voice-enabled technology during early-morning shifts.
  • Australia is the second global market to test Archy, a voice-enabled AI system, following its deployment in more than a dozen United States restaurants as McDonald's seeks to revitalize sales.
  • Chief Restaurant Officer David McMullen stressed the technology is designed to help crew members, not replace them, while the system achieves 99 per cent accuracy and allows customers to request human interaction.
  • Schofields Restaurant Manager Kim Carroll called the trial 'really exciting,' noting it makes the job 'so much easier' by freeing staff to focus on cleaning and beverage preparation.
  • Burger King is rethinking its AI strategy following customer backlash earlier this year, with Vice President of Brand Technologies Chakri Somisetti noting guests avoid talking to bots due to preference for human interaction.
