World Cup Ticket Scams Warning as Fraudsters Poised to Exploit Demand From Fans
Lloyds said ticket scams rose 36% this season, with victims losing an average of £215 as fraudsters target fans online.
Data from Lloyds Bank shows a 36% surge in football ticket scams during the current Premier League season, prompting urgent warnings for fans ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Fraudsters specifically target supporters of top-tier clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, where victims lose an average of £215 to fake season tickets or VIP packages.
Criminals often use social media to advertise phantom tickets, creating fake waiting lists and bogus "pre-release" offers to pressure victims into making irreversible bank transfers before vanishing.
In response, the Government and Lloyds are collaborating on the "Stop! Think Fraud" campaign, led by the Home Office, to educate football supporters on identifying and reporting ticket fraud.
Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds, advises fans to use official channels and ignore "too good to be true" offers, warning that professional-looking content can be fraudulent.
