World Bank Announces Water Security Plan for One Billion People
The plan will help 400 million people by 2030, with the rest of the target reached through partners and participating development banks.
- On Wednesday, the World Bank announced the "Water Forward" program, aiming to provide sustainable water access to 1 billion people by 2030. The initiative will "expand reliable water services and strengthen systems against droughts and floods."
- Some 4 billion people currently face water scarcity due to "unclear policies, weak regulations, and financially unsustainable utilities that have slowed progress and deterred investment," the Bank said.
- The Bank will provide technical advice for 400 million people, while partners including WaterAid, CIFF, the Netherlands, and the UAE will support 600 million more. Fourteen countries have already committed to reform.
- World Bank President Ajay Banga said water "determines whether people are healthy enough to work, whether children have a childhood to learn and to explore, and whether businesses can operate and economies can grow." Tim Wainwright of WaterAid stated the group is "100 per cent behind Water Forward."
- David Michel, senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, warned that "the Bank's initiative faces a long and difficult road ahead," noting that countries with greatest water insecurity often lack capacity to reform.
