WorkSafeBC: B.C. Employers Must Protect Workers From Heat-Related Illnesses

WorkSafeBC says employers must assess heat risks, provide water and rest breaks, and train workers as it records 335 injury claims since 2021.

  • On Tuesday, WorkSafeBC issued a bulletin reminding employers to protect workers from heat-related illness as Environment Canada issued heat alerts across British Columbia. The mandate applies to staff working both indoors and outdoors.
  • Todd McDonald, WorkSafeBC's head of prevention services, warned that higher temperatures increase heat stress and stroke risks, "which can be serious and even life-threatening." WorkSafeBC received 335 heat-related injury claims over five years, with 47 last year.
  • Prevention manager Sandeep Mangat said employers must conduct hazard assessments and schedule strenuous tasks during cooler hours. "We are recommending at least having a glass of water, let's say, every 20 minutes because you're going to perspire a lot," Mangat added.
  • Employees should drink water every 20 minutes, wear breathable clothing, and monitor for symptoms like dizziness. Benny, who works for Exquisite Landscaping, follows these practices by taking "micro brakes" to find shade when needed.
  • With a high of 36 C expected in Kelowna on Wednesday, Environment Canada forecasts continued heat across the region. WorkSafeBC encourages workers to report symptoms early and speak up if conditions become unsafe.
