Workers at iconic B.C. hotel serve strike notice ahead of FIFA World Cup’s arrival
Unifor says 600 workers are seeking higher wages, mental-health benefits and gratuity protections after a 99% strike vote.
- On Wednesday, Unifor Local 4276 served strike notice to the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, warning that picket lines could begin as early as Saturday, June 6.
- Minimal bargaining progress on wages, mental health benefits, and gratuity protection prompted the strike notice, following members' 99 per cent strike mandate vote on April 1.
- Unifor Western regional director Gavin McGarrigle noted that more than 600 workers in housekeeping, front desk, maintenance, and banquet departments keep the hotel running smoothly.
- Bargaining sessions are scheduled for tomorrow and Friday, with Fairmont Empress Hotel public relations director Lisa McPhail stating management remains "optimistic and hopeful to conclude a deal by the end of this week."
- This strike notice adds to broader labour unrest across British Columbia, where transit, SPCA, and 911 workers have authorized job actions ahead of the FIFA World Cup starting June 13 in Vancouver.
