Chicago Hotel Workers Strike During Marathon Weekend
The union said 7,000 workers at 46 hotels are seeking higher wages, better benefits and safer workloads as marathon visitors arrive.
Hundreds of union workers walked off the job at six downtown Chicago hotels on Friday, October 9, 2026, two days before the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
After an 85% strike authorization vote last month, UNITE HERE Local 1 members launched the walkout following four months of failed negotiations over wages, healthcare benefits, and safer workloads.
President Karen Kent of UNITE HERE Local 1 stated that Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton returned $22.3 billion to shareholders over three years while more than 7,000 workers across 46 hotels struggle to afford rent and utilities.
A Marriott spokesperson stated the company has "robust contingency plans" to serve guests, though UNITE HERE Local 1 warned workers at 40 additional hotels could strike at any moment.
As thousands of marathon runners arrive this weekend, the dispute impacts one of Chicago's busiest periods, with the union noting this could become the largest hotel strike in the city's history.
